ECOWAS JOBS: PROGRAMME OFFICER SMALL ARMS

The Council of the Economic Community of West African states, ECOWAS, established, within the ECOWAS Commission, a Small Arms Unit with the mandate to monitor and coordinate the implementation of the 1998 ECOWAS Moratorium on Importation, Exportation, and Manufacture of Light Weapons, which has been transformed into the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, their Ammunition and other related materials in June 2009.

To strengthen the capacity of the Small Arms Unit to fulfil its mandate, the ECOWAS Commission is seeking to recruit a highly qualified candidate as a Programme Officer-Small Arms.

Supervisor Head of small arms unit

Qualification(s):

  • A Bachelor’s degree in the Social Sciences preferably Sociology/Political Science/International Relations/Security Studies or related fields

  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office tools

  • Possession of a higher degree can be an advantage


Job Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years cognate experience in National, Regional, or International Organisation

  • Possession of a higher degree would reduce required experience to 3 years

  • Good proven knowledge on Small Arms and Light Weapons and Security related issues

  • Knowledge of the ECOWAS policy and operational framework for controlling the proliferation and trafficking in Small Arms may be an advantage

  • A working experience with the National Commissions on Small Arms and Light Weapons and Civil Society organisations may be an advantage

  • Excellent Interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work under pressure and handle politically and culturally sensitive issues
